Winners 2007

This year the ClimbFest will feature a
Speed Competition

The Basics

Number of Categories

There will be four skill categories for both men and women.  Each climber should be able to climb the routes in the skill category.

As in the past, each competitor will answer questions regarding their skill level.  This will allow comp officials to properly categorize competitors.

The ClimbFest staff reserves the right to re-categorize anyone at any time if it appears he/she did not correctly answer the skill level questions.

Number of routes per Category

Three routes for each skill category.

Can we preview the routes? Every competitor will be able to preview and climb every climb in the skill category.  The routes will be available starting at 9 AM.  Registration before that will ensure maximum time to work the routes.
How many falls?

Falls are allowed on each route with the following restrictions:

For the first two falls the clock will continue to run, adding the time it takes to complete a route.

If a climber falls a third time, the competitor is lowered to the ground and will be given the slowest time for that route in the Climbers skill category, plus penalty time.  The penalty time assures fair treatment in scoring for all competitors.

How do you win?

Lowest total time for all three routes wins.  See scoring below for more information.

General Rules

All Competitors must sign a liability waiver. For climbers under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must sign the liability waiver.  Climbers under the age of 16 must have parental or legal guardian supervision while competing.

Previous climbing experience is required.  No climbing instruction will be given.  Competitors must provide their own climbing shoes and harness, and know how to tie-in.  A rewoven figure 8, with backup knot, is required.  No carabiner clip-in is allowed.

There are four skill levels for both Men's and Women's divisions.  You will be placed in a category based on your top-roping ability, as indicated on the registration form. If any category has fewer than four climbers on the day of the event, it may be combined with the opposite sex category at the same level.  ClimbFest judges have the final discretion on ability rating, falls and disqualification and other matters regarding the competition and competitors.  Judges may reassign competitors "self-rated" skill level if ability discrepancies are apparent.

Time keepers will record the climb time.  Belayers will mark the score sheets.  Climbers are responsible for verifying their own time scores before moving on to other climbs.

The competition is limited to a maximum of 35 contestants in category 1-3 and 30 in category 4 (strictly enforced).

The judges reserve the right to cancel the competition at any time on the day of the ClimbFest.  In such an event, all prizes will be awarded in a random drawing to registered competitors.

Official Competition Rules

Each Climber will attempt three climbs in the comp level chosen when registering or as assigned.

The Clock starts when the Climber's second foot leaves the ground.

The time stops when the Climber has touched the clearly marked to of the climb.  Dynamic lunging, AKA leaping for the top is NOT allowed.

The time keeper will call out the time and the Belayer will record the time on the Climber's score card.

Failing to complete a climb will result in a penalty.  If you fail to complete a climb, you get the slowest time for that climb in your category, plus eight (5) seconds.  If you cruise the other climbs, you still have a shot to win, place or show,  See Scoring below for why this can happen.

Falls are allowed and the time to get back on the wall will be added to the total time on the climb.  Belayers will make every attempt to assist the climber in getting back on the wall, or lower the climber tot he ground - whichever the climber chooses.  NO COMPLAINING about the time it takes to get back on the climb or any loss of distance - HAVE A FUN TIME.

Scoring

Scoring is based on the total time for each climb, including penalty time.  When all competitors have completed the climbs, the time for each climb is divided by the fastest time for each climb.  This results in a score of 1 for the fastest climber and a fractional score for slower times.  For example, say the fastest time for climb A is 90 seconds, second fastest time is 105 seconds.  The score for the fastest climber is 1 (90/90)  The score for the second fastest is 1.16 (105/90).  The lowest total score for all three climbs is the winner in that category.  This scoring method means you may not be the fastest climber for one, or maybe two, of the three climbs, but if you have a good score on the other climbs you can still win the category.
